This simple introduction to the structure of the English language has been written to help advanced students and teachers who feel they need to know more about the grammar of English. The book is not concerned with a prescriptive set of rules about English, but instead provides an unfolding explanation of the linguistic patterns which govern our daily use of English. As the author maintains, 'language becomes more interesting the more we learn about it', and this guide has been prepared especially for those who are uncertain about English structure and about the terms used in talking about language. Part One sets the scene, providing some basic principles about language (including language varieties and 'standard English').
