Présentation de l'éditeur

This book describes the structures of genes in molecular terms and summarises knowledge about bow their activity is regulated. The methodology of genetic engineering for the production of useful medical and other products in bacteria is presented. A number of specific examples are discussed in detail, taken from bacteria (which are most clearly understood) and higher organisms, including humans. There is dicussion of some diseases which have a genetic origin, such as thalassaernia and sickle cell anaernia. Recent research which is linking the genesis of cancer to a family of viruses is described. Designed as a text book for honours students in the fields of genetics, biochemistry and microbiology, the approach in this book is mainly biochemical, rather than classically genetic.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book, first published in 1996, is a concise yet fully informative coverage of the structure and function of genes. It describes DNA and how it replicates, how DNA is transcribed and translated into proteins, the organisation of genes in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, the control of gene expression and the role of retroviruses and oncogenes in cancer. There are additional discussions of gene families, genes and the immune systems and mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes. This is a third edition of a successful undergraduate text. It has been extensively updated, particularly in regard to advances in our understanding of replication and transcription.
