Paths of Continuity examines the impact of the Third Reich on the German historical profession before and after 1945. The essays look at ten prominent historians whose lives and work spanned the period from the 1930s to the 1960s. Their response to the Nazi regime ranged from open resistance to willing collaboration. Ironically, however, much of the impetus for scholarly innovation after 1945 came from historians with earlier ties to the antiliberal 'folk history' of the Nazi era. All in all, this insightful collection of essays provides fresh insight into the development of West German historical scholarship since 1945.
"The scholarship...is of a very high quality, meticulously documented, and argued with great sophistication." H-Net Book Review
"Judged as a whole this is a truly splendid volume, carefully edited, intelligently constructed, and offering challenging arguments that open up new and hitherto neglected stands of continuity and discontinuity in German historiography." Hermann Beck, German Studies Review

They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). Gently used, untorn dust jacket. -- A collection of essays that examines the impact of the Third Reich on the German and Austrian historical professions before and after 1945. The book explores how historians navigated the transition from Nazi rule to the post-war era. Key Themes and Arguments: - Scholarly Continuity: The central thesis of the book is that, despite the massive political upheavals of 1933 and 1945, there was a remarkable level of continuity in the German historical profession; the Nazis did not completely purge the professoriate, nor were there systematic purges by West German or Austrian authorities after the war; - Roots of Innovation: Ironically, much of the innovation in West German historical scholarship after 1945 - particularly in social history - had its roots in the anti-liberal "folk history" (Volksgeschichte) developed by historians who had ties to the Nazi era; - Range of Responses: The volume analyses the varying responses of prominent historians to the Nazi regime, which ranged from open resistance to willing collaboration. The book uses a biographical approach to trace these "paths of continuity" by examining the careers and works of ten influential historians: Friedrich Meinecke (1862-1954), a major figure of traditional German historicism; Gerhard Ritter (1888-1967), explored the tension between change and continuity in post-1933 historiography; Hans Rothfels (1891-1976), an influential historian whose work spanned both pre- and post-war periods; Franz Schnabel (1887-1966), focused on his role in maintaining a liberal Catholic historical tradition; Heinrich Ritter von Srbik (1878-1951), examined for his "All-German" (Gesamtdeutsch) historical vision; Hans Freyer (1887-1969), linked to the "genealogy of social history" and the impact of political myth; Hermann Aubin (1885-1969), discussed regarding his influential work on "folk history" and regional studies; Otto Brunner (1898-1982), examined for his radical-conservative roots and transition from folk history to structural history; Werner Conze (1910-1986), a key figure in the development of "structural history" (Strukturgeschichte) in West Germany; Theodor Schieder (1908-1984), portrayed as a pivotal figure in the post-war "self-reflection" and innovation of the field.
