Synopsis

This book presents and analyses vortex methods as a tool for the direct numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flows. Vortex methods have matured, offering an interesting alternative to finite difference and spectral methods for high-resolution numerical solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations. Research in the numerical analysis aspects of vortex methods has provided a solid mathematical background for understanding the accuracy and stability of the method. GEORGES-HENRI COTTET received his Ph.D. and Thèse d'Etat in Applied Mathematics from Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. He is currently professor of mathematics at the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France. PETROS D. KOUMOUTSAKOS received his Ph.D. in aeronautics and applied mathematics from the California Institute of Technology. He is currently a professor at FTH-Zurich and is also affiliated with CTR and NASA Ames/Stanford University.
