Synopsis
The specially-commissioned essays in this 1999 book discuss the ways in which performance is central to the practice and ideology of democracy in classical Athens. He has published widely in Greek literature and culture. His books include Reading Greek Tragedy (1986), The Poets Voice: Essays on Poetics and Greek Literature (1991) and Foucaults Virginity: Ancient Erotic Fiction and the History of Sexuality (1995). Robin Osborne is Professor of Ancient History in the University of Oxford and Fellow and Tutor of Corpus Christi College. He has published widely in Greek history and archaeology.
