Synopsis

The black-and-white art of Stan Cross, cartoonist and comic-strip creator, was known and loved throughout Australia for over fifty years. The creator of Wally and the Major and The Potts, his most famous work is the cartoon 'For gorsake, stop laughing: this is serious!' Stan Cross was born in 1888 in Los Angeles but he grew up in Perth and at the age of twenty-four travelled to London, where he studied drawing at St Martin's School of Art. In 1919 the radical popular magazine Smith's Weekly was founded in Sydney and Stan Cross was an instant staff member, creating the first comic strip in Australia, You and Me, which soon became The Potts. Stan drew 'For gorsake, stop laughing: this is serious!' for the 29 July 1933 edition of Smith's Weekly. The cartoon was so popular that all through the Depression years prints were framed and hung on walls in offices, factories, hotel bars and barbers' shops. Stan joined the Herald in Melbourne in 1939 where he created the Wally and the Major series. Stop Laughing, This is Serious contains 140 classic images from Stan Cross's oeuvre, and sets his life in the context of the remarkable history of black-and-white art and cartooning in Australia
