No other continent on earth is a prone to bushfires, over such a large area, as Australia. Fires are a constant and ongoing part of our history, our ecology and our culture. Yet despite repeated disasters, across all states throughout the last two centuries, we seem to be no better at surviving bushfires today than we were when fires burnt through the first European settlements? What is it about Australia that makes it so prone to fires? Have humans made thing worse, or better? Is it possible to live in the Australian bush, yet still be safe from fire? This book is a personal journey of discovery that attempts to answer some of these questions and understand why, after so many years, people are still dying in bushfires.

À propos de l'auteur

Dr Danielle Clode is a science writer fascinated by scientific history. Her love of the Australian landscape, and exploration, was born from a childhood spent sailing along the east coast with her parents on a gaff-rigged yawl. Her previous books include Killers in Eden (Allen & Unwin 2001 now a ABC TV documentary). Danielle's environmental history, As if for a Thousand Years (VEAC) is due in July 2006 while Continent of Curiosities: A voyage through Australian Natural History (CUP) is due in September 2006. Danielle researched Voyages to the Great South Land while a Creative Fellow at the State Library of Victoria. She has previously been the Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Fellow at Museum Victoria and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford where she completed her DPhil in zoology.
