His second book following The View from Hawk Mountain, thisabout Harwood's summer as a volunteer at on the American Museum of Natural History's ornithological research station on Great Gull Island off the tip of Long Island, in between the Long Island and Block Island Sounds. Harwood would go on to win the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing forOn the Road with John James Audubonco-authored with his wife Mary Durant. Illustrations by Richard Edes Harrison. Laid in is a signed letter from the Linnean Society of New York about the 50th anniversary of the acquisition of Great Gull Island by the American Museum of Natural History and the island's conservation and research history. A near fine copy in blue cloth with a black cloth spine. "See page 55" is written by the previous owner on the half-title page, and page 55 includes an annotation about a personal connection in the writing, "Dough Heilburn's 3rd wife"; the interior is otherwise clean and crisp.
