Designed to enhance a traditional calculus course, this text presents activities for exploration of calculus concepts utilizing the computer algebra system, DERIVE. Rather than concentrating on scores of mathematical manipulations, these activities ask students to actively observe and analyze mathematical principles using DERIVE to handle the manipulative work. Students use DERIVE in these activities - particularly its graphing and computational capabilities - to discover for themselves why mathematical principles work as they do, developing deeper conceptual understanding in the process. The activities involve three types of material: topics covered in class, topics expanding on class discussion, and calculus applications.
