Présentation de l'éditeur

Of the not too difficult problems connected with the preparation of this little book one alone deserves a moments consideration. In order to select a few representative pieces from the abundance of Renaissance literature it has been necessary todefine with some acairacy the end proposed. It is evident tha Vthe point of view of the historical student would be quite different from that of the Italian humanist, if the latter were to sit in judgment upon the literary productions of his time. It would suit our purpose ill however if we sfwuldprefer the polished sentences of Bembo to the virile utterances of so indifferent a Latinist as Pius II. It is the verdict of posterity yseeking to discover in the literary remains of the period of Italian greatness, traces of the beginfiing of the modem spirit that the chefs doeuvre of that period have been thrust into obscurity by the growing importance of those ingenuous by-products of intellectual effort which more truly reflect the tendencies of the age. In a similar manner it has been thought proper to neglecjt the productions of the Florentine Academy which deal not too skillfully with theological and metaphysical problems that have for our age a value little more than archcsological and for their oimi time merely that of intellectual exercise. The writings of a Pico delta Mirandola have for the modern student scant interest other than that which reflects from a character of especial interest and beauty. In the following pages the task has been to offer selections fairly illustrative of the rich and varied forms of thought and action which go to form the historical synthesis to which has been attached the name of the Italian Renaissance.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
