Présentation de l'éditeur

Several months ago, I was invited to assist in the chapel exercises at the Rhode Island Normal School. At the close of the brief service, I was asked by Principal A lger to speak a word as to the early days of the present school, to which I gladly responded in words of congratulation and of historic reminiscence. Principal A lger then invited me to visit the session of the Senior class and I was introduced by him as a former Commissioner of Public Schools. Singularly, the class was studying the story of the State Normal School and IW as urged to occupy the period of recitation by a review of the school history. This I did to the apparent gratification of the principal and the class, all of whom stated that they found it difficult to discover the facts of the founding. I endeavored to make very clear to the class, the reasons for the failure of the first school, and the conditions in educational affairs in Rhode Island in the interim, between the first and second schools. The suggestion was then made that I ought to write a history of the Normal School, inasmuch as I was the only survivor of the active educational workers of that period, and the only one intimately acquainted with all the details of its founding. I made a half promise that, some day, I would.
