His discussion ranges across chaos theory, neural networks, molecular biology, evolution, the human brain, economics, and other fields newly connected by what came to be called the sciences of complexity. Written for a general audience, the book combines popular science with reflections on knowledge, consciousness, rationality, and the philosophy of science. Pagels argues that computer simulation offers a new way of understanding reality, comparable in intellectual importance to the telescope and microscope. Contemporary descriptions emphasize his ability to synthesize difficult scientific ideas into accessible, readable prose. Condition: Trade paperback in Good condition. Covers show moderate shelf wear, rubbing, scattered scratches and light soiling, with creasing near the front hinge and diagonal creasing to the lower portion of the rear cover.
