Etat : new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1971). (1858) 1971 facsimile edition. Ppxvi,281. Blue boards. Very good in dust-wrapper. 3,100 specimens arranged systematically, with full catalgoue information and descriptions. "The object of this Catalogue is to give a description of all the species of Colubrine Snakes in the Collection of the British Museum, with an indication of their history and origin, and an account of the species, to be found in other collections, which are dsiderata to the National Museum." "Dr. Guenther observes, .'The chief object of every branch of Zoology I consider to be the discerning of species, and I object to the tendency of those zoologists who establish a new species for almost every individual, and so destroy the entire basis of our science. In comprising sometimes many varieties under one species, I have no fear of going too far, as I think it preferable to characterize as a variety a form, which may afterwards prove a real species, rather than overburden science with nominal species.'" Vendeur : PEMBERLEY NATURAL HISTORY BOOKS BA, ABA, Iver, Royaume-Uni
Etat : Fine. xvi, 281, . . HB. Fine in d/w. Facsimile reprint of the original 1858 edition. An important early systematic catalogue of snakes by Albert Carl Ludwig Gotthilf Günther (1830-1914), one of the leading nineteenth-century zoologists and for many years Keeper of Zoology at the British Museum. The work catalogues approximately 3,100 specimens in the British Museum collection, arranged systematically, with descriptions and information concerning their provenance and collection history. Gunther also incorporated knowledge of specimens in other collections and identified species then lacking from the national collection, making the work substantially more than a simple inventory. Of particular interest is Gunther's approach to the definition of species. He opposed the proliferation of inadequately founded new species and preferred, where evidence was uncertain, to recognise forms as varieties rather than burden zoological nomenclature with what might prove to be nominal species. The catalogue consequently provides an important insight into the development of nineteenth-century reptile taxonomy as well as documenting the rapidly expanding collections of the British Museum.
