Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Minor damage on top edge of dust cover. This book was specially commissioned from international patristic scholars to examine different aspects of the theological and political conflicts arising in response to the Arian controversy of 318-337 and its apparent resolution at the Council of Nicaea - what did 'Arianism' become and how did the new generation of anti-Arians respond? There has been much recent research on the later phases of the Arian controversy - on for example Athanasius, Eunomius, the Cappadocians, Hilary of Poitiers and the fragmentary literature of later Latin Arianism - as well as on Arius himself. This has revealed how little the so=called Arian controversy had to do with Arius and his opinions. This book centres on the period which immediately followed the deaths of Arius and Constantine, where pro-Nicene and anti-Nicene doctrines developed through a proliferation of schisms and alliances - a remarkable period of theological diversity and novelty. These studies form a cohesive attempt to move beyond the classifications and language of earlier scholarship and to recognise and describe the range of diversity which existed among the many confessional groups of the later fourth century.
