Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition. ***Please note that this is an ex-library copy. ***Very good in dark grey cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The boards are quite clean, but there are darker strips at the top and bottom of the spine which extend slightly to the boards where there was some library tape (now removed). Head and tail of spine and top corner tips slightly creased. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. No foxing. Internally also good with the following library marks: library stamp, barcode and remains of lending sheet to the front free endpaper (stamp offset slightly to the front pastedown), 'King Alfred's College, Winchester' library stamp to the printer's page, and a blank white sticker to the rear pastedown - no other visible marks. Pages clean with no marks or foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a very good red dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.00 net. The dustwrapper is complete and well preserved, with no creases, chips or tears. The orange colour to the spine is slightly faded, and there is a darker patch at the bottom of the spine where a library sticker was (now removed). Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed. No loss. ***xiii prelim-pages plus 210 printed pages, including an Index and one-page note on the author at the back of the book. ***'In this collection of his recent essays, many first published in the New Yorker, George Steiner relates the 'language of revolution' to our experience of literature. In what ways have the act of reading and the process of imaginative response altered under the pressures of the new theories of grammar? Is the personal extra-territoriality of certain masters - Beckett, Borges, Nabokov - representative of a larger change in the relation of the writer to his native speech? Are there points at which the recent developments in the life sciences touch directly on our image of man as primarily a 'language animal'? ***In Steiner's view, the incorporation of the energies and speculative forms of science into educated literacy and into the normal life of the imagination will revitalize the shape of our lives, the beliefs we profess and the expectations we may have of the survival of a sickened culture.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***An ex-library copy of the first impression of the first edition, in its original dustwrapper. A good reading copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de réf. du vendeur 8757
