The war on the Iberian Peninsula in the late 18th and early 19th century was three-pronged:  the French invaders, the invaded  Spain and Portugal and the English who defeated (mostly) the invader. But, though most English accounts see the conflict as a series of battles between the French and the English it was a war of independence for the Spanish and Portuguese which had far reaching repercussions outside of the Peninsula; " . notably the liberation of South America from foreign domination.
