Louis MacNeice was born in Belfast in 1907, the son of a Church of Ireland rector, later a bishop. He was educated in England at Sherborne, Marlborough and Merton College, Oxford. His first book of poems, Blind Fireworks, appeared in 1929, and he subsequently worked as a translator, literary critic, playwright, autobiographer, BBC producer and feature writer. The Burning Perch, his last volume of poems, appeared shortly before his death in 1963.

The book first appeared in the UK in 1955, but apparently was rushed into print and contained a number of errors. The 1959 edition followed with the errors corrected. This is the first Faber paperback edition published in 1984. ***Near fine in the familiar 1980s Pentagram-designed typographical covers with a portrait of the author on the front cover. The covers are clean, with just some light marks and rubbing at the edges, and with a light crease to the bottom corner of the back cover. No significant creases and no tears. No bumps - corners sharp. No fading even to the spine. There is an original Dillons Bookshops label on the back cover. Contents also nice and clean, with no inscriptions. Paper stock just slightly tanned with age.
