Synopsis

In his memoirs and fiction, Primo Levi bore witness to the suffering of the Holocaust and books like The Periodic Table and The Drowned and the Saved are now recognised as classics of twentieth-century literature. Throughout his writing life, Levi also produced poetry and this volume collects together all his poems, including eighteen that have not previously appeared in book form. Short and spare, the poems employ the same courageous and steady gaze at the worst that can happen that illuminates his prose.

À propos de l'auteur

Primo Levi (1919-87) was born in Turin and worked as an industrial chemist until 1943, when he was captured as a partisan and sent to Auschwitz. The memoirs and essays that followed, If This Is a Man, The Truce and The Drowned and the Saved, were reflections upon his experience as a prisoner and a survivor. A later autobiography, The Periodic Table, as well as several short stories and a novel, further established his literary reputation. His two books of poetry, Shema and Ad ora incerta, were released after his death as Collected Poems.
