Lord Roll was born in Austria and came to England in 1925. After working in Whitehall, Washington and Paris, he became Permanent Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Economic Affairs, and since 1966 has been active in the City as an investment banker. His "A History of Economic Thought" has run to five editions, and has been in print for over 50 years. This autobiography offers both a chapter of contemporary history and the personal story of a man who has played a part in the political and economic affairs of Britain, Europe and North America.
