Hardcover. Etat : Good. The Manual of Karate by E. J. Harrison is a classic introduction to the art, techniques, and philosophy of karate, written by one of the earliest Western authorities on Japanese martial arts. Harrison, already well known for his pioneering works on judo and Eastern combat systems, presents the fundamentals of karate in a clear and accessible manner, explaining stances, strikes, blocks, training methods, and the principles underlying effective self-defence. Illustrated with photographs and diagrams, the book offers valuable insight into karate at a time when the art was only beginning to gain recognition outside Japan. Combining practical instruction with historical background, it remains an important work in the development of martial arts literature in the English-speaking world. The text presents karate as a means of physical training as well as the most effective system of self-defence and counter-attack. Harrison took-up the practice of Judo, and in 1911, became the first Westerner to be awarded a black belt in that art. Consequently, Harrison went on to write a number of books about Japanese martial arts, presenting to the West its first glimpse of Asian martial arts. Harrison's work in this area is a forerunner to many others who would later follow in his footsteps, and it must be remembered that Harrison made his way through old imperial Japan, and trained in the martial arts as they then were, strict, often harsh, but always disciplined, serving the dual purpose of physical and spiritual development.
