Synopsis

A failing romance. A Sweet Deal. A Little Girl Lost. And Found. Ms. Sharon Silverina Langhorn was set in her ways. And why shouldn’t she be? A product of New York City in the 1970s, she had seen the sputtering of the Hippies’ Utopian promise of freedom and equality, and the rise of the moronic robotic Yuppies. Pettiness and doubt seemed ever present in her life, sniping at her from behind every small victory. So when real estate lawyer and Good Jewish Son Leonard Rothstein offered her the price of a lifetime on a veritable mansion up in the twin towns of Tug Hill and Old Forge, nestled near the foot of the Adirondacks, she knew no man, or woman for that matter, would stand in her way. But then there was Karen… Lovingly restored from his original handwritten notes, KAREN’S CLOSET is the 1996 novel by artist, musician and underground filmmaker Mario Rienzo, who died of cancer in 2017. The publication of this book fulfills a deathbed promise made to him by ICONICIDE frontman Chris/the Antimessiah.

À propos de l'auteur

A long standing presence in the NYC Underground since the mid 1980s, Mario Rienzo was a triple threat – an accomplished artist, writer and musician, who also published his own zine, Clawmarks, and fashioned his own makeup and special effects for equally underground horror movies like Eyes of the Coven. A musician whose metal roots were evident from his work with such bands as Armageddon, Unknown Origin and Omen II, Mario also worked with such luminaries as Jacko Pastorius, although he is probably best known as the drummer for the bands Iconicide and Sinner Steel. Mario was a powerful and prolific writer, not only for his own project Intelligence Is Bliss, but as an author of narrative prose. His magnum opus, and the work he took the most pride in, is his novel Karen’s Closet. It is the story of Queens native Sharon Silverina Langhorn, a hard boiled and fiercely independent product of NYC in the 1970s, who rebounds from a failing love affair with flying colors, securing a sweet real estate deal on an eccentrically built mansion at the foot of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. Sharon, however, is unaware that her new home is haunted by the ghost of Karen, a young woman whose life – and death – were a private and intimate Hell. Mario Rienzo tragically died of cancer in September of 2017, and over the following month, sequestered within his apartment, were found stacks of artwork and writing, among these the finished yet uncorrected handwritten rough draft manuscript for Karen’s Closet, which Mario had written from March 1996-March 1997, but which had never been published during his lifetime. Six painstaking, diligent months later, Chris Iconicide has fulfilled a deathbed promise to Mario Rienzo by releasing Karen’s Closet under his independent umbrella imprint All Rites Perverse, and has been joined by esteemed local artist Leslie Lowe, who has poured her heart and soul into painting the novel’s wraparound cover.
