When the father of my four children died I started writing in an effort to process my grief. I wasn't just processing the grief from his death. I finally had the freedom to share candidly about the past ten years of my life, the hardships, the abuse and my journey into healing from trauma. This is my story of loss, religious abuse and rediscovering who I want to be. Our lives together were unconventional, and if the journey of my healing isn't inspirational, at least it's an interesting story.
This nonfiction memoir recounts our unique lifestyle of extreme minimalism. We traveled the country with an old car and a tent, lived on campgrounds and were constantly downsizing.
Over the years my husband's beliefs became more fanatic, and after having four beautiful children it became clear that our lifestyle and his view point were no longer safe for our family. The story, however, did not end with the dramatic tale of my escape.
It ended in tragic loss with my husband's unexpected terminal illness and the quickness at which it took his life.
After enduring the hardships, fighting demons and filing restraining orders I still laugh. I laugh because in the midst of it all, there is still joy. I laugh because without laughter life would be unbearable. I laugh because I choose love and forgiveness.
