Synopsis

I never really knew a lot about card-playing growing up. My father-in-law loved a game of Setback or Hearts and occasionally persuaded me to play early in my marriage. It was great fun. At least I got familiar with the deck a bit, enough to know the cards and their values. I know there is no chance of being dealt a twelve of any suit from a traditional deck, so if you get one, something's awry! It reminds me a little of life. We arrive in innocence, find our place, our normalcy, and if we're fortunate, a state of peace, contentment, even joy! We get comfortable with the terrain of our lives, thinking we know what to expect, so if life deals us a strange card we don’t always know what to do with it. Our twelve of hearts came to us in the office of a pediatric cardiologist the day before our older daughter's twelfth birthday. It tilted our world and forced us into different “selves” than we had started out. We were never perfect, no, but we learned so much as we bowed our heads and prayed our prayers and played the Twelve of Hearts. We thank God for our brave beautiful warrior and for the army He added to us in a 27-year-long fight...
