Barbara Jaffe has carved out for herself a unique position in the history of photography, exploring in great depth the potential of the negative print. Using her 4-by-5-inch view camera, black-and-white film and expired pos/neg Polaroids, she makes photographs that are mysterious and transcendent. The photographs in Dark Sun are negative prints. In this reversed black and white image, a duplicate but opposite world is revealed, one that is self-luminous, radiating rather than reflecting light. This special light describes a space that is strikingly real and yet metaphysical in nature. Therefore, it allows Jaffe to explore other issues of concern, the heart of which is the dual nature of reality: negative/positive, spiritual/material, invisible/visible, shadow/light. It also satisfies the artist’s core belief that the human eye does not tell the whole story, that the truth is just below the surface. Lyle Rexer writes: “Jaffe chooses and stages her subjects so that perceptual ambiguity becomes more prominent the longer we look, until we understand that we have entered, literally, another visual dimension.” Barbara Jaffe’s photographs have been widely exhibited, and are in many public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen, Germany, Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland and corporate collections such as IBM and the Sprint Corporation. Jaffe has been the recipient of a prestigious New York Foundation for the Arts award as well as grants from Eastman Kodak and the Polaroid Corporation. Barbara Jaffe was born and raised in New York City and makes her home in Greenwich Village. Jaffe has taught at Parsons School of Design, Sarah Lawrence College, and in 1995 was hired to run the Photography Program at Hofstra University in New York. She is now Professor Emerita, having retired in 2020.
