Although Christianity is an incredibly diverse religion, with disparate beliefs and practices over the centuries, this essay outlines how the doctrine of the Trinity--the belief that the God of the Bible is one divine nature but three persons--is Christianity's defining doctrine. Thus, this essay argues, the doctrine of the Trinity has given Christianity its distinctiveness among world religions, served as the boundary between Christianity and non-Christianity, and provided a foundation for Christian thought and practice.

Brian Stanley Douglas is husband to Jordan, father to one son & two daughters, and Associate Pastor at All Saints Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho. He grew up near Miami and spent a couple years in Brighton, UK before moving to Boise in 2008. Before becoming a pastor, he taught history, humanities, and political science at the high school and university levels. He has studied at Stetson University, Knox Seminary, Sussex University, and Boise State University and is a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers.
