Synopsis

It is a cold January night in 1945 in the midst of raging war. When Giichi admits he has decided to refuse the military draft notice, Kinuko is devastated. She is fully aware that this decision will lead not only to family dishonor but likely to Giichi’s death by torture. Thus begins the couple's painful conflict, Kinuko driven by sorrow and anger, shredding Giichi's heart. When Giichi's beliefs are ultimately tested by brutal force, Kinuko must decide where her own beliefs lie. This is the first English-language novel that depicts an account of Japanese conscientious objectors. It reveals the Japanese political landscape and citizens' everyday lives between the years leading up to Pearl Harbor and the time of the atomic bombs. The novel represents the author's desire to honor the best of humanity and provide Western readers with what they haven't heard ― a spectrum of Japan opposite from the Rape of Nanking.
