A beautiful illustrated print edition of The Stanleys of Cranberry Isles…And Other Colorful Characters by Ralph Stanley who vividly tells the history of his beloved part of Maine. Ralph Stanley is known nationally as an accomplished and influential boatbuilder. Ralph starts with the Stanley family’s arrival from Marblehead and Gloucester, Massachusetts at Cranberry Isles in about 1755. He tells the history of many of the founding families of Mount Desert and the surrounding islands and continues into the twenty-first century. Having descended from, among others, the Stanleys, Lurveys, Gilleys, Clarks, Richs, Robinsons, and a Dix or two, he weaves each family together in his own personal way, describing how they and their neighbors built their communities. He also writes about the rusticators for whom the families sailed, filling his stories with colorful details not found in other histories. His people accommodated the newcomers “from away” and grew to love many of them. One of the endearing things about his story is that the rusticators grew to love them back. With emphasis on the Cranberry Isles and the western side of Mount Desert Island, the book is full of history, genealogy, folklore, and loving gossip about the people who bred him and those with whom he grew up. The Stanleys of Cranberry Isles…And Other Colorful Characters is illustrated with photographs from Ralph’s large collection, now given to the Southwest Harbor Public Library and available online in its Digital Archive. The database also houses the results of twelve years of meticulous consultation with Ralph about hundreds of vessels and the genealogies and histories of some 569 people Ralph mentions in the book.

A vital genealogical record, tracking the interconnected family lines of early settlers including the Stanleys, Lurveys, Gilleys, Clarks, Richs, and Robinsons. Written with a narrative's tone, which balances rigorous historical facts with affectionate folklore, personal memories, and humorous community "gossip" about the 569 specific people Stanley mentions. Renowned maritime historian William H. Bunting reviewed Stanley's writing style during its compilation, noting that Stanley possessed a "sharp eye, sharp ear, and sensitive appreciation and understanding of the human comedy," allowing him to be deeply insightful without being judgmental. It has been noted the work is an indispensable treasure for anyone interested in Maine genealogy, boatbuilding culture, island life, or Down East folklore. It reads less like a dry textbook and more like listening to a legendary local storyteller pass down generations of coastal history. Signed by Author(s). N° de réf. du vendeur 10957
