BACK FROM INSANITY: THE REDEMPTIVE POWER OF WORK is an autobiographical novel about the years 1989-2019 in the life of Mark Steven Hershenson. In 1989, Mark, a Yale graduate, was a doctoral student in clinical psychology, nearing completion of his PhD and working as a psychotherapist in a mental health clinic, where he was also an administrator. Facing multiple severe stressors, he suffered a disastrous mental breakdown and found himself in the psychiatric ward of a nearby hospital. Not only was his dream of being a psychologist over, but he also felt his life was over. BACK FROM INSANITY details the recovery process as Mark moves from over a decade of despair to, eventually, step-by-step, finding meaning and purpose in life by helping people through his work in several social service agencies. The book strives to give hope to individuals who have had a psychiatric hospitalization, and is intended for them, their families and friends, and the mental health professionals who treat them. More specifically, Mark's goal is to try to shorten the recovery period for those who have been in similar circumstances by pointing out that work, not despair, can be a road to redemption.
