Synopsis

I got into healthcare because I care deeply about others and have a tremendous desire to see those I serve live healthy, fulfilling, amazing lives. But the day-to-day world of medicine that deals with the typical ills of the human body isn’t fairing so well. In my practice, I had patients who clearly felt unwell - yet when I ran labs and other diagnostics, the results came back normal. When I told these patients that I could find nothing conclusive, they would look at me with those eyes and say, “But Doctor, I KNOW there is something wrong with me!”

There were more times than I care to admit in these situations when I was tapped out in terms of a solution. I could write them a prescription to manage their symptoms; the medications would make them feel a little better (but not for long); and then they would come back for a refill… month after month. At the same time, I saw medications fail in a very personal way, both when my mom attempted suicide, despite being on a number of anti-depressant prescriptions; and when my dad continued to functionally decline, despite medications and surgical intervention for his cervical myelopathy.

I am so proud of my profession. I know without a doubt that doctors and the modern medical system can be the stars in an otherwise dark sky. In the midst of COVID-19, healthcare providers can be seen working with superhero-like stamina to take care of unbelievably sick patients, pivoting constantly to dart around the barriers of ever-changing demands, risking their own safety and that of their families to save the lives of perfect strangers. But despite our brilliance when it comes to critical care, I believe there is something inherent in the way we practice medicine that needs attention. I know it is unfashionable to say, but when it comes to chronic disease, we participate in a system that leaves everyone wanting. If only we could better manage chronic disease by reducing dependency on medications and diminishing the impact of chronic disease on the body, would pandemics like COVID-19 have a different outcome?

As a doctor, my overwhelming desire was to cure, but it felt like I was just treating symptoms, never knowing or reaching the cause. This restlessness made me ask some key questions. “What if I had different tools in my toolbox as a physician? What if I stopped thinking that my medical training taught me everything I needed to know? What if I accepted that modern medicine is missing a critical ingredient?” Spending time with these questions changed everything for me.

I wrote this book because, particularly in the wake of COVID-19, I believe it is more important than ever to treat chronic disease differently. Less chronic disease means more survivors in the wake of another pandemic, more patients living their best lives, and more doctors benefitting from the joy of truly being a healer. We all want that. It’s why we are here and why we work so hard.

I’ve witnessed what seem like miracles using hypnotherapy, but really, it's just evidence that working with both mind and body simultaneously can achieve results superior to working with the physiology alone. This book is my way of sharing that evidence with you.

By chronicling some of my favorite cases that highlight the interplay between mind and body, emotion and life experience, disease and health, I will shine a light on our ability to completely revolutionize modern medicine.
