Synopsis

Sweet Pea is a nine-year-old Mustang mare living on the Short & Sweet Ranch. Among her duties as the ranch boss, Sweet Pea helps a chubby guard dog with ranch security, tries to keeps a grouchy pony happy, and rescues a rooster that's always in trouble. Most importantly, though, she is the trusted ride for her favorite cowgirl, Reinette. Life couldn’t be better for this once-wild horse--but Sweet Pea’s world is about to be turned upside down.

For her birthday, Reinette is given a new colt named Kobe to train. Immediately, Sweet Pea is forgotten as Kobe becomes Reinette's favorite pet. Things get worse as Kobe becomes friends with the other animals, too. Sweet Pea begins to worry that when Reinette no longer loves or wants her, and the animals no longer need her, she will be sold.

Sweet Pea decides to get rid of Kobe. She begins sabotaging his training sessions with Reinette and tries to turn the animals against him. Eventually, Sweet Pea’s actions begin to affect her relationships with the other animals. They begin to question her leadership—and so does Sweet Pea. Is she really doing what’s best for the ranch by getting rid of Kobe, or just doing what’s best for herself?

Based on real-life characters, The Adventures at the Short & Sweet Ranch includes illustrated “hoof notes” explaining horse terms, such as colors, body parts, and terminology. Glossary also included for increased vocabulary, perfect for readers transitioning from picture books to novels.
