Roger Lockyer looks at the major themes of politics and religion and shows how the Tudors re-established a strong monarchy, building on foundations laid by their Yorkist predecessors. The accession of the Stuarts brought new strains as well as intensifying old ones, and the middle years of the seventeenth century saw the collapse of the monarchy and the temporary establishment of a republic in England. Roger Lockyer has been both a schoolteacher and a university lecturer, having spent the greater part of his life teaching at Royal Holloway, University of London. His previous publications include The Early Stuarts: A Political History of England, 1603-1642, and James VI and Tudor Britain, 1485-1603, with Dan O’Sullivan. He is also the author of a major biography: George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628).
