This book is unique in bringing together all strands of English Jacobism in an accessible chronological framework, highlighting key individuals, providing a biographical dictionary of less well known English Jacobites, an account of the major primary source material, and a gazetteer of places to visit. It will appeal to any member of the general public who is interested in the Stuart cause and the Jacobite rebellions as well as those who would like to know more about 18th century society in the great house and the tavern.

Evelyn Lord
Evelyn Lord is on the board of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge. She is the author of the successful publications 'Investigating the Twentieth Century' (2002) and 'The Knights Templar' (2001)
The English Jacobites have been overshadowed by their colourful Scottish counterparts and the exploits of ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’. The English Jacobites, no less important than the Scottish came from all walks of life, bishops, peers of the realm, smugglers and soldiers of fortune for example. They operated through a network of spies, underground clubs, and alehouses, creating a secret army dedicated to restoring the Stuart kings to the throne.
`The Stuart Secret Army’ is unique in bringing together all strands of English Jacobitism, highlighting the key individuals, and providing biographical details of the less well known, but colourful figures of eighteenth century England. It argues that they were fighting a lost cause. England as a whole did not want a return of a Catholic king and the possibility of a civil war.
The Jacobites are a popular and romantic movement. In `The Stuart Secret Army’ Evelyn Lord uncovers the activities of the English Jacobites: the people, the plots, codes and societies that are hidden aspects of this cause.
