Before the Cock Crow A Novel (The First Born of Egypt: Volume III Three 3)
Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
This is the third volume in Simon Raven’s ‘First Born of Egypt’ saga. The story opens with Lord Canteloupe’s strange toast to ‘absent friends’. His wife Baby has recently died and Canteloupe has been left her retarded son, Lord Sarum of Old Sarum. This child is not his, but has been conceived by Major Fielding Gray. In Italy, there is an illegitimate child with a legitimate claim to the estate, whom Canteloupe wants silenced. The plot also sees young Marius Stern and his school friend, Tessa Malcolm, drawn into Milo Hedley’s schemes and into a dramatic finale orchestrated by Raisley Conyngham, Milo’s teacher.
Simon Raven was born in London and educated at Charterhouse and Kings College Cambridge, where he read Classics. Afterwards he served in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. In 1957 he resigned his commission and turned to book reviewing. His first novel The Feathers of Death, brought instant recognition and his popular First Born of Egypt series encompasses seven volumes. His TV and radio plays, of which Royal Foundation is the best known, are classics. He also wrote the scripts for the Pallisers series and Edward and Mrs Simpson.

Etat : FINE. First printing. The third novel in this saga by this English novelist, essayist, and dramatist, who was also controversial amusing and offensive - a series whose theme is "the purposes, beliefs and ways of life of the growing young as observed, encouraged or deplored by their elders." Written primarily for money (Raven was for many year's on Blood's payroll), in these he also had "fun killing off many of the survivors from the earlier sequence, usually in absurd and/or humiliating circumstances." 250 pp. Wraparound dust jacket painting by Lawrence Toynbee. Very near fine in a like dustjacket (slight crease to laminate of dj, a publishing flaw). N° de réf. du vendeur 85454
