He confirms beyond doubt that the long-held suspicion that court martial procedutes were neither equitable nor effective: the court was usually composed of junior offices; offenders rarely had the benefit of legal advice; medical examinations were not automatically part of the proceedings; and shell-shock was as yet a poorly understood phenomenon.
