Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. In 1957, she used her childhood doll Edith and two teddy bears as the subjects of her first book The Lonely Doll. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success. A year later, she brought Edith and The Bears back in Holiday For Edith And The Bears, which Wright photographed in one of her favorite places, North Carolina’s remote Ocracoke Island. Both books made The New York Times Best Seller list and Wright went on to achieve the publication of eighteen other popular stories that have been loved by three generations of children and their parents. Edith, Little Bear and Mr. Bear did all of their own stunts while shooting the books in which they played starring roles. They were soaked in the surf, nudged by ponies and rescued from the ocean. More than half a century after their adventures, the three are living together happily in semi-retirement.
Once there was a little doll. Her name was Edith. She lived in a nice house and had everything she needed except someone to play with. She was lonely! Then one morning Edith looked into the garden and there stood two bears! Since it was first published in 1957, The Lonely Doll has established itself as a unique children's classic. Through innovative photography Dare Wright brings the world of dolls to life and entertains us with much more than just a story. Edith, the star of the show, is a doll from Wright's childhood, and Wright selected the bear family with the help of her brother. With simple poses and wonderful expressions, the cast of characters is vividly brought to life to tell a story of friendship.
