Synopsis

The transmission of engine power to the driving wheels of a vehicle has always posed a number of problems to automobile engineers. Ideally, the full engine power should be available at all road speeds, but it has so far proved difficult to find a suitable mechanism to convert the engine power in this way, and there are further problems introduced by the vehicle layout and the need to allow for movements of the suspension or steering. The first chapter considers the increasing importance of the disposition and layout of the transmission and how it is possible to provide greater convenience and space to the passengers or load. Also discussed are the basic engineering requirements of a transmission. In further chapters the important aspects of transmission function are expounded, and the different types of clutch mechanisms are contrasted. Gearboxes and gearchanging, and how the choice of gear ratios is made for all the different types of vehicle are discussed. The attainment of these ratios by the use of gearboxes and variable ratio axles is also outlined. Automatic gearboxes and fully variable transmissions are also discussed, and a chapter follows on overdrives and the improvement in fuel economy effected by their use. The book concludes with a chapter on axle and differential designs for cars and commercial vehicles. "Gears and Transmissions" is the fourth volume of the Automotive Technology Series and is intended for non-specialists and students or engineers needing to know the rudiments of transmission design, and who have only a general engineering knowledge. 119 illustrations.
