Even as it built up hope for every man's success, it stacked the deck against them with the combination of volatile markets and the absence of any safety net for those who fell on hard times, fueling anger and resentment. Unspooling the mystery of what sent the Harps reeling exposes the hidden, violent legacies of the American Revolution.

Katherine Grandjean is an associate professor of history at Wellesley College, where her research explores early American and Native American history, English colonialism and cultural encounters, environmental history, and violence in American history. Her first book is American Passage: The Communications Frontier in Early New England, and her work has been awarded the American Society for Environmental History's Alice Hamilton Prize for Best Article and the William and Mary Quarterly's Douglass Adair Memorial Award.
