Essie Luella Nelson is a widow of a College President, who spent most of her life being wife and mother. She was born in 1928 in the small town of Frizille located in Western Kansas. Her work life included volunteer activities - from Church Secretary to College Groundskeeper. She served as Executive Secretary of the Cowley County Community College Alumni/Endowment Association. After the death of her husband, Dr. Gwendel A. Nelson, she decided to try to write memories of his growing up years in Squatter Town, a southwestern section of Wichita, Kansas. He had intended to consult with a friend, Leland L. "Stack" Hayward, to collect and record all the interesting storys from those early days. Since her husband never found the time to start this project, she decided to try to do it for him. This book is the result of her determination to see that the work was completed. In collaboration with that good friend, this is the result of their efforts.At the present time she is completing in the process of editing her manuscript entitled, "The Nelson Story in America". That book includes her life story, along with the ancestorial information about her Nelson and Smith families as well as the story of her interesting life with a promising young educator.
