Many famous myths and legends have emerged from the remarkable period of the Wild West, yet the true stories of many of the outlaws and lawkeepers are even more fascinating. The Story of the Wild West portrays the gunfighter's West as it was. Most of the book is set beyond 'the wide Missouri' between the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the turn of the century, but it begins with a scene-setting chapter, 'Why the West was Wild', explaining how that wildness came about and why it was so fascinatingly unique. The gunfighters, good, bad and - more often - somewhere in between, are the chief protagonists of the book, and they are neither glorified nor condemned, simply shown as human beings in dangerous, troubled times. Myths like the fast draw and shoot-outs at high noon are debunked, however. The characters include train and bank robbers, cold-blooded killers, and honest and corrupt lawmen, while famous figures like Jesse James, Billy the Kid and Wild Bill Hickok are examined in depth. So are lesser-known but remarkable men like Tom Smith, who tamed Abilene with his fists. The ladies, 'soiled doves' and otherwise, are given a chapter to themselves, and there is a special section devoted to Western films and books. Inevitably, some legends bite the dust in the course of the book but, along with the violence and squalor, there is the sheer excitement of the story of the West, and - in episodes like the Lincoln County War and the Johnson County War - an epic quality that time has not dimmed.
