Leonard Gribble?s Stories for Boys (1978) is a time capsule from the age of packed lunches wrapped in actual paper, when a torch under the duvet was a reading strategy, not a metaphor. Expect brisk adventures where bicycles are practically co-stars, pocket money stretches to the horizon, and resourcefulness is measured in string, pocketknives, and sheer pluck. There are daring scrapes, suspicious strangers, improbable clues, and an ironclad belief that a day well spent includes at least one tree, one mystery, and a dog with Opinions. The prose is clean and clipped, like a school haircut, and the pace is pure downhill-on-gravel: fast, slightly alarming, and somehow wholesome. 1978 also means delightfully concentrated nostalgia: crisp school caps, sensible jumpers, and moral compasses that point firmly to ?tell the truth (eventually).?
