American political life is presently in a death spiral, drowning in a sea of increasingly complex laws. There is an assault against the unalienable rights of life, liberty and property, orchestrated by the top-down god-state. Can we take Occam’s razor, rooted in the proactive, and cut out all the reactive elements? Can we cut out the metastasizing cancer of distrust, and restore the health of trust and simplicity throughout our common political life? Here, there are four ideas for consideration:1.First, the six pillars of honest politics start with our unique national identity and foundation – unalienable rights given by the Creator that belong to all people equally – life, liberty, property and thus, the power to pursue happiness. Under the second unalienable right, this means that the intrinsic nature of the Gospel advances religious, political and economic liberty for all people equally.2.Second, these pillars serve a level playing field for all ideas to be heard equally, and by definition, are pre-partisan in nature.3.Third, these pillars serve checks and balances on power in government, according to the consent of the governed.4.And fourth is the sharp application of Occam’s razor, to “reduce needless redundancies,” or to “keep it simple.” Here I propose a model for a simplified state constitution and likewise for the U.S. Constitution, to cut state laws and the U.S. Code by well over 99 percent.

John Rankin is president of the Theological Education Institute (TEI) International. He grew up in an agnostic Unitarian context before he ran into the presence of the living God, and converted to a biblical and evangelical faith in 1967. He holds graduate degrees in theology from Gordon-Conwell and Harvard, and is ordained through the Vineyard Christian Fellowship. He is also founder of the Mars Hill Forum series, through which he engages leading skeptics, unbelievers and others, on theological and political topics. The goal is not to win an argument, but to win a relationship, apart from which the Gospel will not be advanced. He and his wife were married in 1977 and have four grown children. His websites are www.johnrankin.org and www.teii.org.
