Charles Bell's novel is a thought-provoking literary work that initiates discussion on the problems that adversely affect the African American community. In light of the low high school graduation rates for African American men and the absence of effective leadership in the African American community, Bell's novel proposes the question Where Did We Go Wrong? By providing an insightful analysis of the problems many African Americans encounter such as high incarceration rates, unemployment, and political absenteeism, Bell encourages his readers to take ACTION! As Bell states, "Change is a choice-and today we must choose a different course because I fear what the future holds for us as a people." Throughout the exploration of research in the specified areas of interest, Bell adequately conveys the urgency of this situation and the need for unity in the community; "Brothers and sisters WE can do better!"

Charles Bell is a Detroit, Michigan native and graduate of Detroit Public Schools. He is deeply interested in urban education reform and social problems in the African American community. After graduating from Denby Technical High School in 2004, Charles enrolled at Wayne State University and majored in psychology. It was here that Charles first noticed the lack of African American men pursuing higher education and he began to identify possible reasons for the absence of his peers. After graduating from Wayne State University in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in psychology, Charles obtained a master's degree in school psychology in 2009. Throughout the course of obtaining his master's degree, Charles became deeply frustrated with the education and political leadership in Detroit as well as the lack of focus on "real" change in academia. Where Did We Go Wrong allowed Charles to provide an insightful analysis on the quality of education in urban cities, such as Detroit, Michigan, and propose critical questions regarding the factors that contribute to the problems we see in the African American community today.
