Synopsis

The Healthy Transitions for Girls Workbook will guide you and the girls you love through the minefield of cultural challenges that harm girls today. This essential prevention tool for girls ages 8 to 14 is a strength-based curriculum to help girls develop a positive relationship with their bodies. It is a scientific fact: How a girl feels about her body affects every area of her life for the rest of her life. Positive body image is a resilience factor against almost every challenge girls face today:

  • Gender confusion
  • Bullying
  • Self-harm
  • Depression
  • •Anxiety
  • •Eating Disorders
  • •Trauma
  • •Risky Sexual Behaviors

The Healthy Transitions for Girls Workbook will help:
  • Reframe negative belief systems and create positive belief systems.
  • Learn why being a girl is unique and special
  • Strengthen parent/child relationships
  • Support appropriate boundaries in peer relationships
  • Provide tools for emotional regulation
  • Encourage healthy concepts of gender role
  • Increase self-esteem through a holistic understanding of needs and goals
  • Teach coping skills
  • Build communication skills
  • Motivate healthy eating, exercise, and other self-care practices
  • Offer several mindfulness strategies
  • Share crisis intervention tools
  • Create an understanding of cultural messages and their effect on girls’ belief systems
  • •Arm girls with strategies for resisting harmful media messages
  • •Develop values such as empathy, respect, self-control, spirituality

In Healthy Transitions for Girls, the objective of each activity is an “I can” statement, such as “I can develop a working definition of femininity that is non-sexualized,” or “I can recognize my support systems and learn to ask for help.”

Healthy Transitions for Girls challenges the unhealthy stereotypes that are leading girls onto the dangerous path of rejecting their gender. It helps them to embrace their female bodies as purposeful and beautiful. It honors the latest brain science as well as a new understanding of the mind-body connection, offering a creative, “whole body” experience. Real learning needs to involve the logical left side of the brain as well as the intuitive, emotional right side of the brain. Girls need to have emotional connections to the concepts being taught for them to internalize new attitudes and behaviors. For that reason, art, role play, tangible objects, and movement activities, are used to teach abstract concepts in this curriculum.

À propos de l'auteur

Peggy A McFarland, MS, LPC has over 30 years experience working with girls and teens. As a mother, teacher, mentor, and counselor, she understands the challenges faced today by pre-adolescent and teen girls. Healthy Transitions for Girls was developed out of a passion to help other parents, mentors, and professionals have tools to combat the onslaught of media messages that cause girls to develop a devastating, life-long "disconnection" from their bodies. When girls disconnect from their bodies they lose a connection with their intuitive, feminine nature--it is a tragic loss of identity. Peggy has a private counseling practice in the "outback" of Eastern Oregon. She has four daughters of her own and many "adopted" daughters.
