Synopsis

I launched HeadButler.com in 2004 as a cultural concierge site that would recommend the best in books, music and movies. And I do mean "best." Because everything ever published, recorded or filmed is available online, I don't have to do what magazines and most web sites do: focus on the new releases (you know, the ones you pick up six months later and wonder why you bought them.) On the site, I guide you not only to the truly great stuff out now but also to terrific old books, music and movies you may not know. Over a decade, I've published more than 1,500 reviews. It seemed like a good time to pick the 100 "essentials" that I believe will give you pleasure for decades.

As a magazine journalist, I’ve been a contributing editor for Vanity Fair, New York, Architectural Digest, Reader’s Digest, The Los Angeles Times Magazine and Departures, and a contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times, etc. As an author, my books include Airborne: The Triumph and Struggle of Michael Jordan; Highly Confident: The Crime and Punishment of Michael Milken; Pre-Pop Warhol and The Other Guy Blinked (with Roger Enrico). Most recently, I helped Twyla Tharp on The Collaborative Habit. On the Web, I co-founded Bookreporter.com, now the hub of the Internet’s most successful non-commercial book network. From 1997 to 2002, I was Editorial Director of America Online. In 2004, I launched HeadButler.com.
