Synopsis

Every year approximately four million kids enter first grade. By fourth grade, two out of three will have given up on reading and school. Nearly half of those will drop out. NCES Nations Report Card testing tells us reading scores for 17 year olds have not improved in forty years. And yet this tragedy can be avoided if we do one simple thing--build the love of reading in them BEFORE they face what is causing millions to give up each year. Learning to read is so simple that even a six year old can do it. It just takes doing what works, and avoiding the things which cause kids to hate reading. In "Point to Reading" you will find out what makes children give up on reading, and how to avoid that happening to your child. More importantly, you will learn what works to build a love of reading in less than a year. What is special about PTR is that it is easy to learn and simple to do, without expensive, complicated curricula and endless workbooks. Imagine a way of reading with your children that builds comprehension and communication skills, a terrific vocabulary, and the ability to read years above their grade level. And doing it in less than a year because it is fun for both you and your child. All this and you get to hear your child say, "I love to read because I'm really good at it." Sending our children to school not knowing how to read well is like putting them on a baseball team not knowing how to throw or catch, making them bench-warmers instead of players. Preparation is the key to success. The hope for the future of education is through the love of reading.

À propos de l'auteur

The author is a regular guy and father with no special degrees in education who discovered a way to read a great story with children that focuses on the real reason for learning to read. That purpose is to enjoy reading and become so good at it that kids read for the rest of their lives. In 1978, Henry read "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien with a six year old boy and by the time they finished the book (about eight months later), the boy was reading and comprehending the story fluently. Years later when his own sons turned six he pulled out "The Hobbit" and shared the experience with them. The amazing results the children achieved and the requests from other parents for instructions on how they could do that with their own children led to the creation of "Point to Reading". What is special about PTR is that it is easy to learn and simple to do. If a father with a high school diploma (Henry) can do this, anybody can. The author lives with his wife on a small ranch in Central Texas and is dedicated to the goal of all children being given the opportunity to love reading and to become really good at it. He believes that a country that can send men to the moon and bring them back safely can make the love of reading and learning the standard for all our children. We can do this.
