In this textbook on the psychology of thinking and reasoning, Alan Garnham and Jane Oakhill cover a broad range of research on these topics. Although the book reflects the diversity of approaches to questions about thinking and reasoning in the psychological literature, the authors attempt to integrate their material where possible and to identify the broad underlying issues. In particular, they focus on the question of when thinking is best characterized as the following of abstract rules and when as the building and manipulation of mental models of concrete situations. Topics covered include: historical background, the building blocks of thought, induction, hypothesis-testing, decision-making, deductive reasoning, problem-solving and game-playing, expertise, creativity, the development of thinking, applications of research on thinking and reasoning.

"The strength of Thinking and Reasoning is its comprehensiveness. It covers not only the most important topics, from categorisation and reasoning to decision making and problem solving, but also other major perspectives on thinking such as expertise and developmental issues. The book also examines more recent topics, such as teaching thinking and creativity, which are not to be found in older textbooks. In general this is an excellent text: readable, comprehensive, accurate, and up–to–date. I would be surprised if this did not become the major undergraduate text in the area for several years to come." European Journal of Cognitive Psychology
"An outstanding work, which should be recognized both in the UK and the USA as the best introduction to the psychology of thinking. It is comprehensive and lucidly written – an impressive book." Professor P. N. Johnson–Laird, Princeton University
"Garnham and Oakhill present their book under the guise of an objective text for ′intermediate and advanced undergraduate students′. It is, however, delightfully informative and charmingly opinionated. It should be read by upper–division under–graduate and graduate students, faculty, and researchers, as well as two–year technical program students." P. L. Derks, College of William and Mary
In this introduction presents a wide range of research on all aspects of thinking and reasoning. Thinking has been studied in many ways, and has been analyzed from many theoretical viewpoints. Thinking and Reasoning draws on a variety of approaches but locates its subject matter squarely within the theoretical framework of modern cognitive psychology and cognitive science. After a brief historical introduction, the book covers all core areas of thinking and reasoning: concepts and images, the relation between language and thought, logic and deductive reasoning, induction, hypothesis testing, statistical reasoning, decision making, problem solving, expertise, creativity, everyday thinking, the teaching of thinking skills, and the development of thinking.
Thinking and Reasoning includes an abundance of illustrative examples of reasoning problems, many of which the reader can attempt to solve before reading on to find the solution. This text will provide the ideal introduction to thinking and reasoning.
