This latest volume in the Blackwell Bible Commenatry series aims to offer to students and a general readership a commentary and reception history of the old Testament book of Daniel.
There are numerous commentaries, sermons, poems, paintings, and even music which offer a fascinating insight of the significance of this proto–apocalyptic book to various religious communities. These have often created genuninely interpretative advances to the text, as well as displaying interesting socio–cultural insights. In addition to the textual commentary which will form a part of this volume, this will offer a uniquely layered and textured understanding of the book.
The New Testament and early rabbinical midrashim will be the logical starting point for the reception history part of the volume. Several patristic writers (espeically Jerome and his secular opposite Porphry) will be examined. Reformers, sectarian groups amond the 17th century English and American Puritans, and more recent work of artists and dramatists will round out the book.
Biographie de l'auteur
Sibley Towner is a Professor of Biblical Interpretation at the Union Theological Seminary, Virginia. During a distinguised career he has taught at many of the top Divinity schools in the States, including Princeton and Yale. He is the author of nearly 100 articles and a number of books, including How God deals with Evil (Philadlphia, 1976); Daniel: A Bible Commentary (Atlanta, 1984) and Genesis: A Commentary (Westminster, 2001).
