Synopsis

This textbook presents an account of modern ideas about physiology, using diagrams and graphs to amplify the text. The book is divided into five parts: basic concepts (cells, nerves, synapses and muscles); maintenance systems (body fluids, and the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and respiratory systems); communications and central control (the nervous system, special senses and endocrinology); reproduction; and other regulatory mechanisms.

Essentials of Physiology is directed to students in tertiary education in their first year studying within medicine, dentistry or science, or entering one of the allied health professions. The content of the text bas been guided by an internationally agreed set of objectives and it is divided into four major sections. The first section on basic properties covers cells and cellular events, and the functional principles of nerve, muscle and synapse. The subsequent `dynamic' sections cover maintenance, communication, reproduction and integration, both internally and in response to the external environment.

The Allweis control system diagrams have been replaced by cartoon-style illustrations which are easier to interpret. The kidney and fluid balance sections have been extensively updated in this new edition, the section on the immune system bas been rewritten and the section on endocrinology bas been re-organized. Essentials of Physiology abridges the content of the larger physiology textbooks offering an alternative to a major purchase and is fully referenced for further reading where this is required.
