Synopsis

Thomas Wentworth, an obscure Yorkshire Gentleman, rose to be Charles I’s most influential Minister, and Earl of Strafford. The story starts with his birth in 1593, and moving swiftly through his childhood and education, it deals with his marriage to his first wife, Margaret, his second to Arabella, their children, and his third wife, Elizabeth. His mistress, Lucy, Countess of Carlisle, is prominent. His Parliamentary career is exciting, and his development as a Baron and then a Viscount in the Upper House more so, being a vital part of what led to the Civil War. He is appointed to be Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Ireland by Charles in 1633, which he rules as a King. The characters are real people: Charles, Buckingham, Laud, and other ‘great ones’ of those times. Strafford was a complex and talented man obsessed with doing the right thing, yet often led astray by his own ambition. His convictions make many enemies amongst the corrupt, and those, like John Pym, who wished to transfer the monarch’s power to themselves. Strafford acquires more enemies by championing the poor against the rich. This book deals with one of the most appalling and gripping miscarriages of justice in English history, and its aftermath. If you enjoyed Hilary Mantel’s “Wolf Hall”, and Alison Weir’s “Innocent Traitor” or “The Lady Elizabeth” this novel is for you!!

T.G.Stanton is an English solicitor who moved to Australia in 2005. He is married with three children and five grandchildren. Always fascinated by history, particularly of the 17th Century, and by legal controversy and trials, and after a great deal of research, he wrote this novel about one of the most important but overlooked men of that century, and the legal struggles he faced, in Parliament and out of it. He believes this book is the only novel in which the Earl of Strafford takes the leading role. The only other fictional writing about him where he plays the lead that he knows of is a verse play called "Wentworth" by the poet Robert Browning, in the 19th Century. Mr Stanton's other hobbies, apart from trying to write, are playing the clarinet - especially classical music), tennis, and walking in the countryside. This is best dome in England where he can walk from one village to another, have lunch and a pint, and walk back, and that, he says, is best done in the company of his wife, Christine.
