Synopsis

Excerpt from Practical Methods of Inorganic Chemistry

A saturated solution is Obtained when more of the solid substance is brought into contact with the solvent than it is able to dissolve; a portion of the solid then remains undissolved. An unsaturated solution results when less of the solid is brought into contact with the solute than it can dissolve at that temperature. Thus one may have a satur ated solution of, say, sodium sulphate at but it will be unsaturated if the temperature is raised to Fig. 5 graphically represents the solubility of various substances at different temperatures. By examining the curves it will be seen that the solubility Of sodium chloride is almost constant at all temperatures up to while most of the other substances show a progressive and marked increase in solubility as the temperature rises.
